I'm a Google reader addict so here is my latest shares enjoy It's graduation time in many parts of the world, and that means long ceremonies and a lot of speeches. The graduation speech is a tough gig; most speeches are soon forgotten, assuming they made any impact at all. The 2005 graduation speech by Steve Jobs garnered a lot of attention at the time, and is still talked about today, having been downloaded millions of times. If you have never seen Jobs's Stanford speech, check it out below. Last week the famous comedian and TV talkshow host Conan O'brien, who was sharing the stage with luminaries such as former US President George H. W. Bush, gave a commencement speech for the ages. Although the speeches are different in style, they are both great examples of entertaining speeches which connect and engage and ultimately leave the audience with something memorable and valuable.

كاريكاتير من عام ١٩٩٩ بقلم هادي* أيقظني شريكي في السكن الأسبوع الماضي ضاحكا، وأخبرني أنه من الآن فصاعدا سيرتدي ثوبا أبيضا وشماغا. لم أضحك، فتلك نكتة مستهلكة مبنية على إشاعة مغرضة نتداولها بين الحين والاخر، لكنه ما لبث أن أكد لي أن هذه المرة مختلفة وأن الاردن فعلا قرر الانضمام إلى دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي. “ما حد حكالي” كان هذا رد فعلي الأولي. أنا أسمع هكذا إشاعات منذ سنين ولكن يبدو أخيرا أن الحلم تحول إلى حقيقة. في البداية أعتقدت أنه وبحكم غربتي في الشقيقه مصر أن الخبر لم يصلني. هاتفت اخي وسألته عن الموضوع “والله .. متى .. ما حد حكالنا” كان هذا جواب أخي! أنا لن اخوض في سلبيات وإيجابيات الانضمام لهكذا تكتل متجانس سياسيا وجغرافيا واقتصاديا واجتماعيا. ولن أحلل التبعات الاقتصادية والسياسية والاجتماعية لهكذا قرار على الاردن، فالأسباب معروفه للجميع، خصوصا أهلنا في المغرب، كما أن الصحف الاجنبية أشبعت الموضوع تحليلا. ما سأتحدث عنه هو آلية أتخاذ القرار. من الواضح أن القرار اتخذ بعد سلسلة اجتماعات ومشاورات انتهت بتراضي الاطراف المعنيه على ضم الاردن والمغرب للمجلس. لكن ما هي التنازلات التي قدمها الاردن؟ لماذا لم يطرح الموضوع على مجلس النواب؟ لماذا الشعب آخر من يعلم؟ بالمناسبة ليست هذه المره الاولى. فقد انضم الاردن سابقا الى منظمة التجارة العالمية في عام 2000 وانضم الى اتفاقية الكويز واتفاقيات اقتصادية وسياسية واجتماعية أخرى لم تجلب لنا سوى ارتفاعا في المديونيه ووبالا سياسيا واجتماعيا واقتصاديا. وتم كل هذا بدون معرفة أحد. لماذا تستفتى شعوب دول الاتحاد الاوروبي قبل الانضمام للاتحاد الاوروبي؟ هل مجلس التعاون الخليجي أقوى من الاتحاد الأوروبي؟ في دولة مثل المجر ناقش الإعلام قضية الانضمام للاتحاد الأوروبي لعدة سنوات تخللها آلاف الساعات من البث التلفزيوني ومئات المقالات والتحليلات في الصحف واللقاءات والمناظرات المباشرة بين الأطراف السياسة المختلفة قبل أن يستفتى الشعب بطريقة الاقتراع المباشر. هل الشعب المجري أوعى من الشعب الاردني؟ حتى الاخوه في الخليج لم يشاورهم احد. الم يستفتى الشعب في السويد والنمسا لمعرفة رأيه في انضمام تركيا الى الاتحاد الاوروبي؟ يعني باستثناء بعض المناوشات الخجوله في البرلمان الكويتي لم نسمع بأي شيء. حالنا الان يذكرني بحال الفتيات اللواتي يتم تزويجهن بدون علمهن أو موافقتهن. يعني بالعربي “زوجوها دون تدري”. وكالعادة، سيتم توزيع عريضة على شيوخ العشائر ووجهاء المخيمات والفعاليات الرسمية والشعبية من شتى الاصول والمنابت للتوقيع على التأييد للانضمام والتأكيد على حكمة القرار ولا مانع من التذكير بنعمة الأمن والأمان التي نباهي بها العالم أجمع من فوق لتحت. ومن الواضح أيضا أن الأوامر صدرت لكتاب التدخل السريع للدفع باتجاه الانضمام حيث امتلأت المواقع الأكترونية والصحف الورقية بعشرات المقالات التي تشيد بالخطوة الحكيمة وتبني قصورا في الهواء. بعض المقالات تحدثت عن العمق التاريخي والجغرافي والسياسي الذي سيضيفه الاردن للمجلس وانعكاسات ذلك المباشره على الشارع الاردني انطلاقا من القاعده الاقتصاديه “من جاور السعيد يسعد”. وذهب البعض الى أن “الأمن والأمان” الأردني سيسهم في تعزيز الأقتصاد الخليجي على طريقة “الرابط العجيب”! البعض بدأ يتحدث عن تدفق الاستثمارات الخليجيه للاردن. يعني هناك أمل أن يتم تشطيب البرجين على الدوار السادس أو ان نستخرج زيت الزيتون من الصخر الزيتي. وطبعا لم يخلو الأمر من قصيدتين أو ثلاثة تمجد الأخوة في الخليج وتأكد على وحدة الدم والنفط. حتى المقالات التي حاولت تقديم تحليل موضوعي أجمعت على ان “المفاجأة كانت سارة” وتناست ان المشكله تكمن في “المفاجأه” نفسها كمبدأ وليس في كونها كانت ساره أو سيئه. أما آن لانظمتنا أن تدرك أن زمن استغفال الشعوب قد انتهى فعليا. لمذا تصر أنظمتنا على ان تدفعنا نحو الانفجار؟ متى سيتم إشعار الشعوب بأهميتها ومشاورتها في القرارات المصيريه التي تمس حياتها؟ ما لا تعلمه انظمتنا العزيزه أن عصر “لا اريكم إلا ما أرى” وعصر “أنا ربكم ألاعلى” قد سقط مع سقوط بن علي. انا وبصراحه سأصوت ب “لا” في حال، لاسمح الله، طرح القرار للتصويت. أنا حر وليس عندي رغبه بالانضمام حاليا ولا يحق لاحد أن يصادر رأيي أو أن يجبرني على شيء فأنا، على رأي أحد الكتاب، من هواة “التشكيك والهجوم ووضع العصى في الدولايب”. يعني بالعربي “ما حد إلو عندي” أو كما يقول صديقي الشامي “ما حدا أخو مرائي” أو على رأي اخوتي المصريين “الشعب لا يريد الانضمام”!! *طالب أردني سنة خامسة كلية صيدلة في جمهورية مصر العربية Via Somecards No related posts. Conan O'Brien's 2011 Dartmouth College Commencement Address
Humor is a matter of taste, of course, but I found this speech to be hilarious. And judging from the laughter from the audience, and the luminaries on stage (and even the snickering secret service guys in the back), his tone was right the mark. Conan is a comedian so we expect laughs, but he also had a personal and heartfelt message in his talk. His advice was based on his experience with a very public "failure." Conan's key takeaway message was this: "It is our failure to become our perceived ideal that ultimately defines us and makes us unique. It’s not easy, but if you accept your misfortune and handle it right, your perceived failure can be a catalyst for profound re-invention." Watch on YouTube.
Steve Jobs's 2005 Stanford University Commencement Address
Although Jobs is a self-made billionaire and cultural icon, right from the start Jobs displayed his humility and made a connection with the audience by saying "I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation." After that he wastes no time with formalities and gets right on with laying out the structure of his talk: "Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories." His first story was about "connecting the dots." His second story was about "love and loss." And his third story concerned the issue of death. His stories were deeply personal. All three engaging, personal stories supported his overall key message of "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." Watch on YouTube.
Advice for graduates from a comic book (redux)
A book called The Adventures of Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You'll Ever Need by my buddy Dan Pink was published in 2008. That spring I put together this Slideshare-style deck below that people could click through in about five minutes. The advice is simple and echoes some of the points touched on in Conan and Steve's college graduation speeches above. The advice is just as good in 2011. Usually I don’t post bad design on the blog but these certainly deserve to be posted. How is it even possible that the designer didn’t see the innuendo’s brewing when designing these? This by far is the funniest and greatest-of-the-worst set of logos. It is almost unbelievable that this could happen. Just to add to the humor, some of these were designed for churches…
